Candice found herself sitting at home; Christina and Kelly were out on some lesbian parade or something like that. Candice didn’t really pay much attention to what they said about it other than they tried to get her to join in but Candice had some plans for the day.
Candice was meeting her younger sister for some retail therapy, it’d be fun and something they hadn’t done in a while Candice just hoped that she could find stuff in her size. However she wasn’t meeting her until two in the afternoon so she felt it would be a good time to do a family check.
Candice had her cell phone ready she didn’t want to run up a huge phone bill for Christina and Kelly, just in case they would be mad at her and she hadn’t asked to use it so the cell phone was the best option, first Candice looked up her brother’s number and pressed the little green phone icon.
Valentino Junior: “Hey, you’ve reached the voicemail of Valentino Romero Junior, please leave your name, number and I’ll get back to you. Ciao.”
Candice was a little disappointed as she hadn’t talked to her baby brother in a while and she wondered how he was doing since he left home. Candice decided she’d leave a message in the hope that he wasn’t too cool to call his big sister
“Hi Val, it’s Candice, I just wanted to check how you were doing. You have my number already so please give your big sister a call. Ciao.”
Candice then pressed the red phone icon before going through her contact list again looking for the next person on her list. Maria the middle Romero she was a model who lived in Milan and Candice wasn’t even sure if she had the same number anymore.
“The person’s voicemail is full”
“Ah rats.”
Candice didn’t expect to get through to Maria she always seemed so busy, the jet set lifestyle of models she guessed she barely got time to call home. Candice wondered about how a model lives other than the aspect that clearly stopped Candice from being one… THE DIET.
Candice then came to the number that made her the most nervous of all the number of Mama and Papa, calling Mama was fine but Candice was uneasy because Papa didn’t approve of her career choice. Papa wanted Candice to be the world’s strongest woman no ifs no buts that was his dream for her.
“Mama?”
Candice says with some sadness in her voice, she then waits for a few moments before hearing a voice.
Nicola: “Candice?”
“Yeah it’s Candice, am I talking to Nicola?”
Nicola: “Yeah Candice it’s me, how are you I miss having you and Cadence around.”
Candice sighed as her little sister spoke, Candice at times missed being back home other times she seemed to forget about it altogether. Hearing her little sister’s voice brought a tear to her eye, and he just blurting out of how much she missed Candice made her feel special
“I miss you too; I guess I haven’t been home in a long time.”
Almost three years it was a long time and Candice didn’t even visit after returning from Japan, but she always feared her father scolding her for becoming a phony show girl wrestler. To him there was no honor in it and it brought shame on the family.
Nicola: “Mama wants you to come visit us, and I want one of your hugs. You give the best hugs Candice. Papa misses you too you know.”
Candice wasn’t sure if what Nicola was saying was entirely true, the hug part she believed as Nicola had always loved Candice’s hugs.
“Nicola I’ll come soon and I’ll save an extra special hug just for you, but can I speak to Mama… or Papa?”
Nicola: “MAMA CANDICE IS ON THE PHONE.”
Nicola had a habit of not covering the mouth piece before calling somebody to the phone; Candice held the phone away briefly to protect her ears. Nicola was definitely a Romero with a set of lungs like that at just 13 years of age. Candice could hear Mama’s voice as she neared.
Nicola: “She’s coming Candice.”
Mama Romero: “CANDICE!”
Candice warmed immediately after hearing Mama say her name, and that feeling that Mama can make everything all right came over her.
“MAMA!”
Mama Romero: “Candice why so long before you call us eh? Bright lights and fame make my baby forget all about her Mama?”
Candice sighed as it was always the same no matter the length between calls, or visits it was always too long between them.
Mama Romero: “Three years since I see my baby in the flesh, it’s too long. I bet you aren’t eating properly either, I see you on TV and you lose weight. A Mama worries about this.”
“Mama I am eating fine, and I haven’t lost any weight it’s the small TV you have.”
Mama Romero: “Your Papa refuses to get a new one, and since Nicola turned 13 he has been standing scaring all of the boys in the neighbourhood away. He fears that a beautiful girl like her it will be no time before they start wanting to have sex.”
Candice didn’t really need to hear that from her Mama about her sister but Candice remembers him doing the same to all of the girls when it came to boys, which was why Cal never came to her place directly.
“Mama I don’t need to hear that, I just wanted to find you are all OK. I’ll visit sometime soon I promise. In the mean time how is Papa?”
Mama Romero: “Your Papa is fine, as always he complains about everything sometimes I wonder if he is still in his forties and not in his sixties. He still thinks about his baby though, and I caught him watching your tapes.”
Candice thought for a moment that Papa must have been watching her competition tapes like the time she won Buffalo’s strongest woman competition in 2005. Candice was a little relieved that Papa seemed to be getting over her decision.
“My tapes? My competition tapes?”
Mama Romero: “No, I got Valentino Junior to record some onto tape for us of your wrestling matches. Your Papa was watching them with excitement. I think he sees you are happy in them. You could smile though sometimes you look so mean and I know my baby has a beautiful smile.”
Candice sighed as she pondered if she should tell her mother about how wrestling is and the concept of babyfaces mostly Candice’s opponents and heels which Candice was in-character but did her mother understand that it’s a show and not necessarily 100% accurate.
“Mama they tell me to look mean because it’s believable. Besides it’s kind of cool having people like you because they think you just flattened somebody so I have to act like a mean girl Mama.”
Mama Romero: “Pfft I know that wrestling isn’t real, but a smile might make you look like it is more fun what you are doing to these girls.”
Candice was a little confused about what her Mama said like she somehow understood wrestling and at other times didn’t. Now Candice was going to ask the awkward question though the news she just heard made it a little easier to ask.
“Mama can you put Papa on the phone?”
There was a moment of silence before Mama spoke this seemed a lot longer because Candice was worried about it.
Mama Romero: “He can’t speak now he is away, but you should come visit one weekend he’d love to see you and so would I. Mama could use one of your hugs, and I think Papa would like one too.”
“Ok Mama; I’ll try to get down to see you soon but with travelling it isn’t easy.”
Mama Romero: “Take care of yourself Candice and make sure you are eating well I don’t want my baby showing up all skin and bone.”
“Mama, I love you Mama. Ciao.”
Mama Romero: “Ciao, I love you Candice.”
Candice hung up she was a little sad that Papa couldn’t speak to her, she wanted to believe Mama and that he was away but in her heart she felt that he still begrudged speaking to her.
